How to Find the Right Company for Your Website Redesign Project
on September 02, 2013
Now that we have figured out the goals your website should help accomplish, mapped those goals to necessary features your website should have and determined about how much your website will cost, it’s time to find a good web design company.
You may be thinking that the fact that this is being written by a web design company makes the article lack credibility. I suppose it does, a little.
But as a web design company, we’ve also had a unique opportunity to work with dozens of companies like yours and tell you where many have gone wrong selecting web designer.
So, without further ado, here are a few tips to help you find the right company for your project.
Iron out your budget first
It’s really important to have you budget figured out (a range is perfectly fine!) before you even start looking at web design companies. And be prepared to share your budget with the companies you’re interviewing.
In reality, not every company is right for you. Some may specialize in bigger companies and be too expensive. And some might be way cheaper because they lack the experience or quality you’re looking for.
Having your budget ready and being honest about what you’re ready to invest will help you narrow down your search and find the company that best fits within your budget.
Ask around
You probably know other businesses in your industry. Ask the owners or marketing department who they used to create their website. Make sure you also ask them about how the whole process went and how happy they are with the outcome.
Even more importantly, find out if they’re still working with them and what kind of results they’ve seen. (Did it increase leads or sales? Is traffic to their website up? Increase phone calls?)
Most companies are more than willing to share this information with you.
View agency portfolios
Always, always, always view a company’s work before signing an agreement with them. As the old adage goes, “the proof is in the pudding.”
Looking through the company’s previous work will give you a good idea of how your website will look in the end.
But don’t just settle for a portfolio with good-looking websites. Look for a company with a portfolio of good-looking websites that perform well and have stats to back it up.
Read reviews and testimonials
It’s one thing to hear from the agency about how great they are, but sometimes you need to hear it from other people who’ve worked with the company.
If you’re trying to decide between several different web design companies, take a look at what past clients have said about them on review sites like Google, Yelp and Facebook.
Pay attention to terms and conditions
We’ve had a few clients over the years come to us with what I like to call “web design company baggage.” Some clients lost access to their websites, while others were locked into crazy agreements.
A good web design company will be upfront and honest about their terms and conditions before you sign an agreement, but make sure you’re aware of what you’re agreeing to.
Ask about their cancellation and payment policies and whether you’ll own your website or if they will.
Knowing the answers to those questions will only save you a headache in the future.
Choose the company that’s right for you
We said it before, but let us say it again - make sure the web design company you choose is the one that’s right for you. That means they understand your business, fit your budget and have designed things you like.
If you’ve thought through these things and have a company that meets your criteria - go for it!
