Social Media is like a puzzle: there are many different pieces and it takes some time to figure out what works for overall picture.

Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube are not one-size-fits-all, so we have developed 9 things to help you put your brand’s puzzle together.

All Social Media Channels Are Different

If you have your profiles linked together, you may unintentionally be hurting your brand. All social media channels serve unique purposes and have different audiences.

For example, you can think of all the different networks as part of a newspaper (you remember newspapers, right?). Here’s what I mean:

  • Twitter is the headline
  • Facebook is the front-page article with all the details
  • LinkedIn is the classified section
  • Pinterest is the arts and culture section
  • YouTube is the TV Guide

All of the elements serve different purposes, but complete the overall package. The content you post for one channel may not match the content you post for another.

There Is No Wrong Direction

What do you want to get out of social media? Are you just doing it because everyone else is? Make sure you have defined goals for each channel. Do you want to network with other businesses? Maybe you want to find potential customers? Or do you want to give your fans a place to send feedback? The only wrong direction is a lack of direction.

Be Social

It is no secret that social media should be SOCIAL. Not only should you be personable and try to facilitate conversations, but you should also give them important information and talk about topics that would interest them.

Listen and Respond

Just like in real life, you are going to have customers online that are not happy. This is okay, but make sure you listen and respond appropriately and professionally. Here is a secret: It is not only about pleasing the person who is upset. It is also very important to show the rest of your current and potential customers how you handled the situation. Trust me, they are watching.

Success Takes Time

Be aware of the time it takes to be successful on social media. Not only do you need to spend time sending information out, you also need to make sure you are consistently checking in and seeing what your fans have to say.

Treat Your Fans Like VIPs

People become fans of businesses that are special to them. So, what do you do for them? Make them feel special too. Offer special discounts that are only available to your social media communities, show behind-the-scenes photos and tell stories that are unique to them.

Keep Customers In The Loop

Make your social channels the place to send out teasers when something big is happening. Use your channels to keep customers in the loop. If something is wrong, or really right… let them know about it first.

Sometimes You Need To Sit Back

Let your customers contribute and help each other out. If one is having a problem and another has dealt with a similar situation, it can be good. Some of the best ideas come from the customers, so let them speak and foster good ideas.

Help Others, And Let Them Help You

Whether you connect with a local business (keep your friends close), or competition (keep your enemies closer), help them promote and build creditability. Also let them help you out and even ask them for help or feedback.
